Psoriatic Arthritis

When it comes to dealing with medicine, doctors are usually very sure in their science. When it comes to holistic approaches there is not much support from the medical community, however the following of the movement into holistic medicine is growing. When it comes to arthritis, many people want to try things other than medications. Medical science claims there is no way to prevent or cure psoriatic arthritis with a diet, however many people have tried the holistic approach and have had some success.

What Is Psoriatic Arthritis?

PA (psoriatic arthritis) is a type of arthritis which is accompanied by psoriasis. It is usually most prevalent in the finger and toes but does affect other joints. According to the National Psoriasis Foundation 10-30% of people suffer from psoriatic arthritis, whom have psoriasis. The DietThe holistic approach to creating a psoriatic arthritis diet entails changing your diet in such a way as to exclude foods like; tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. Avoid purine rich foods which are foods like most red meat, and reduce overall fat intake to less than 25%. Eat lots of garlic and fresh ginger.

Garlic is an inhibitor of lipoxygenase, which contributes to inflammation and fresh ginger in your diet helps psoriatic arthritis fight of inflammation as well. Beverages to avoid are the favourites. Coffee, black tea and alcohol. There is the odd exception of having some red wine here and there, but the best scenario is zero alcohol is you want the best benefit of the diet. Avoid supplements of vitamin C and ginseng and try not to use aspirin. Omega fatty acids are good to take as are some vitamins and minerals like A, D, E, Copper, Manganese and Zinc.

There is no place that will claim to you that this psoriatic arthritis diet will absolutely cure your condition, however it has a good chance at relieving your condition and possibly curing it without taking prescription medications.ChoicesIn the end you ultimately have choices to make. There is of course no harm in trying a holistic approach in curing your PA. Do not however neglect the signs that perhaps the psoriatic arthritis diet may not be giving you the results you want or need and that you may need professional medical intervention to sooth and comfort your medical condition.

If you opt for other choices, and on the holistic market there are many lotions and creams and other things that are not FDA or otherwise approved, that claim the best cure or diet for arthritis, be cautious. It is buyer beware. Do not trust in too many things that claim to much. Investigate and research ingredients and claims. You are using these products on your body and you do want the best results for your comfort. At the very least a psoriatic arthritis diet will improve your physical health if not curing your PA. Make good choices and be safe.

Don't forget to take L-Lysine! Couple it with B-12. It will fight the fatigue of PsA.

I most definitely have reduced my Psoriatic Arthritis to almost *zero* symptoms.

I have quit my pharmaceuticals (methotrexate, naproxen).

I did it with diet, exercise, sleep / stress-reduction.

The most important of the above is DIET.

Avoid acidic foods LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!

Avoid coffee, tomatoe sauces, citrus and anything where the label says citric acid.

Eat no meat except fish.

Avoid alcohol.

Avoid chocolate and ice cream (use non-chocolate frozen yogurt insead).

ADD to your diet some good omega 3, such as salmon or fish oil or flax oil.

Exercise:

I do yoga in the hot room as often as possible. All that sweating is cleansing. But at first you must be very careful not to injure your joints until they are strong. Be super careful!

Get your sleep!

Figure out your stress!

But the most important items are diet and exercise in that order.

One year ago, I felt like I needed a handicapped placard for my car.

I just went skiing. My improvement is diet and excersise!

Do it! You can!

I have just been recently diagnosed with PA. Trying to educate myself on this disease has scared me a bit. My eating and exercise habits have been pretty terrible up to this point but I understand now how important it is for me to make serious changes. I am also a big believer in attitude. I know what to do, I just need to get some determination to do what I need to do.

I have gone back and forth for last year between hand and RA doctors. My bloodwork came out clean for everything and yet I had an inflamed finger at the tip. As of today, the last hand doctor says it definitely has to be some form of arthritis more than likely PA (mild) and he said sometimes the bloodwork will not show it. It turns out that I was on 'elimination' diet since Feb which somehow stopped the flareups. So this thread pretty much covers all the same things I was eliminating - tomatoes, coffee, chocolate, meat, oranges. I do not think it is coicidental that I came to that same diet on my own. So I truly believe diets do work to send PA into remission. I also tried acupuncture but after 2nd treatment I did not have the patience to continue since I did not see results. I think I will get more out of meditating on my own for 30 min then acupuncture. But I will try yoga and look for other stress relievers.

I agree with using the diet for Pa. If you deciede to go that route and you use a system like Ayurveda you would want to follow a Pitta pacifying diet. Or also a "alkaline" type of diet if you were to follow the Acid/Alkaline system

Thank you for all of this positive information. I was diagnosed with PA with in the last 8 months. This diet seems to be the way to go. I am so glad to hear about the positive results as it can get rather daunting dealing with this. Good luck to all.

Good luck with your diet- I have had Pa for 20 years and have tried a range of drugs which have reduced obvious symptoms , but caused a great many serious side efects. I would never advocate ignoring doctors advice, but firmly believe the best thing is to radically change your diet to an ayurvedic- pitta reducing - or eat right for your type - I'm type A ( I don't know f this is typical or even relevant) diet. Basically eliminate all processed foods, red meat, alcohol, wheat ,and dairy, coffee to reduce inflammatory processes. It raelly is worth doing: even if you sometimes have to take medication ,it might mean you only take some NSAIDs to keep it under control. Good luck x
